Join the Foothill Foxy Flyers
We are now recruiting committed ladies to learn the sport of Roller Derby. Our freshmeat program skaters practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (You must be fully geared up and on the track by 5:30 p.m.!) at Jack Bulik Park in Fontana. Once you’ve passed the freshmeat program, regular practices are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $5 each practice for visitors. For more information email or give us a call.
Even if you are not interested in the contact and competition of skating on the team, consider joining us as a referee or non-skating official. Our Refs and NSOs are an integral part of our team. We would love to have you join us. Give us a call to find out how.
If you are ready to join us, please complete and print the waiver and emergency forms and bring them with you to your first practice.
Learn the Rules
Flat track roller derby is a complex game with many rules, and those who know the rules, know how to work them to their – and their team’s – advantage. For the latest rules set and other derby related information visit www.wftda.com.
Your First Day
Pack all your equipment and arrive 20-30 minutes early to gear up and stretch. Be ready to skate right at the start time, as we want to maximize the 1 hour training session. Wear comfortable, athletic clothing – we recommend tights in order to avoid rink rash. And don’t forget your water bottle.
Know the Goal
The goal of Derby 101 is to work on exceeding the WFTDA Minimum Skill Requirements. These skills cover skating basics such as stride, glides, crossovers, stops, falls, balance, agility, whips, contact, and blocking. Review these essential skills – you will need to demonstrate proficiency in them, as they’re fundamental to all good derby players. Click here to see the latest minimum skill requirements. There’s also a written test to ensure you know the rules of the game.
After Derby 101
At the end of Derby 101 your skills, attitude and attendance will be evaluated. If you pass, you become eligible to attend league practices and to join our C team. At this point, you will be required to start paying monthly dues, maintaining 75% attendance, and participating in league activities. All members are crucial in keeping FFF running smoothly. We do everything, from promotion, bout production, website maintenance, fundraising and training.
Playing roller derby is fun, but it’s a huge commitment. Aside from attending 2 practices a week, you’ll be expected to participate in committees that contribute to the overall betterment of our league and community. Getting the support of your friends and family is crucial. You will be devoting many of your resources and waking hours to the sport, and it’s important that everyone knows what lies ahead. So why do it? There are many skaters in our league who can’t live without roller derby. It can become a very big and very important part of your life. You will become a member of a large family united by a shared love for the sport. Roller derby will consume you. It will light a fire in you. It will frustrate you. And it will beat you down. But it could be the best decision you’ve ever made.
