Derby 101
Learn the Rules
Flat track roller derby is a complex game with many rules, and those who know the rules, know how to work them to their – and their team’s – advantage. For the latest rules set and other derby related information visit www.wftda.com.
Your First Day
Pack all your equipment and arrive 20-30 minutes early . Be sure to wear tennis shoes for our off skates warm up. Wear comfortable, athletic clothing – we recommend knee length biker shorts or pants in order to avoid rink rash. And don’t forget your water bottle!
Know the Goal
The goal of Derby 101 is to work on exceeding the WFTDA Minimum Skill Requirements. These skills cover skating basics such as stride, glides, crossovers, stops, falls, balance, agility, whips, contact, and blocking. Cadet programs run every six weeks with basics. You will need to demonstrate proficiency in them, as they’re fundamental to all good derby players once you have passed those skills you will be Cadet Bout Eligible.
After Derby 101
At the end of Derby 101 your skills, attitude and attendance will be evaluated. If you pass, you become eligible to attend league practices and to join our Cadet team. At this point, you will be required to start paying monthly dues, maintaining 75% attendance, join a committee and participating in league activities. All members are crucial in keeping FFF running smoothly. We do everything, from promotion, bout production, website maintenance, fundraising and training.
Commitment
Playing roller derby is fun, but it’s a big commitment. Aside from attending 2 practices a week, you’ll be expected to participate in committees that contribute to the overall betterment of our league and community. Getting the support of your friends and family is crucial. You will be devoting many of your resources and waking hours to the sport, and it’s important that everyone knows what lies ahead. So why do it? There are many skaters in our league who can’t live without roller derby. It can become a very big and very important part of your life. You will become a member of a large family united by a shared love for the sport. Roller derby will consume you. It will light a fire in you, it will frustrate you, and it will beat you down. But it could be the best decision you’ve ever made.
